Are You into Salsa Dancing?

Do you enjoy Salsa dancing or want some lessons in Salsa dancing? On June 3rd at 7:00 Edwin Lebron will be performing live at the Quarter (3rd floor) in Harrisburg, PA. Edwin Lebron will be singing a variety of singles from his new album coming out this summer! Plus, there is a schedule of events for the evening. These include:

7:00PM – Social
7:20PM – Salsa lesson
8:15PM – Salsa Dancing and Music

Kids and Cultures: Cultural Sampling Coupon Book

Cultures and Cooking

Every second Wednesday of each month, the Lancaster County Public Library holds Cultures and Cooking from 6:00 p.m. -8:00 p.m. This program is a great family-filled event where you are able to learn about and taste new cultures. The event also features a different presenter each month at the Saint James Episcopal Church, 119 North Duke Street. You do need to register in advance, and a minimal fee will be collected for cooking supplies. Here are the answers to the last newsletter.

1. What are some programs that CWS does to help refugees?

CWS does a lot of programs such as the Crop Walk. However, they are always searching for volunteers to work one-on-one with a refugee as a mentor, English tutor, translator, employment advocate, etc.

2. How have the Iraqui refugees helped the United States?

Some of the Iraqui refugees work as interpreters for the United States Army.

3. Why did the Karen Burmese refugees come to the US?

The Karen Burmese refugees came to the US because they were experiencing persecution due to the fact that they were part of a minority ethnic group in Burma.

4. How many Karen Burmese families have moved to Lancaster since May 2007?

150 ethnic Karen Burmese families have moved to Lancaster since May 2007.

5. How many Bfutanese refugees have resettled in Lancaster County?

There have been over 120 Hindu, Buddhist, and Christian Bfutanese refugees that have resettled in Lancaster County.

First Thursday Latino

Every first Thursday of the month, come to the Puerto Rican Cultural Center to celebrate First Thursday Latino. The event starts out at 6:00 p.m. with a social. It is then followed by a program from 7:00-8:00 p.m. and ends with a network from 8:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Come out and take part in First Thursday Latino in order to “embrace diversity, build relationships, and strengthen the community”.


Imani African Dance Concert

Come out and enjoy the 15th annual community concert on Saturday, June 19th at 6:00 p.m. The event will be held at Franklin and Marshall College’s Roschel Performing Arts Center. Don’t Forget: Taste the World

If you haven’t already signed up, register for Kids and Cultures annual Taste the World. This 3-hour event takes place in 9 different restaurants in downtown Lancaster. You will walk from restaurant to restaurant sampling food from different cultures. Here is the complete listing of the participating restaurants: Coffee Shop Colombian Bakery, Expressly Local (serving Gursha Organic Ethiopian food), Island Caribbean Restaurant, La Costena Peruvian Restaurant, La Dolce Vita Italian Courthouse Bakery, Rachel’s Cafe & Creperie, Sakura Asian Fusion & Sushi Bar, Rice & Beans, and Spyro Gyros. Are You Signed Up for Summer Camps?

Why not try a summer language camps at Your Language Connection. The camps are held at Lancaster Country Day School either from 9:00am-12:00pm or 1:00pm-4:00pm. The camps range from Spanish to Chinese to American Sign Language. Children, ages 4 and older, learn about these other unique cultures through hands-on experiences such as: crafts, songs, and games. Cinco de Mayo

What do you really know about Cinco de Mayo? Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday (not their Independence Day) that is celebrated because of the Mexican victory in 1862 over France. In the United States we celebrate the holiday in order to remember the Mexican heritage and pride.  But how do we celebrate it? In the US, we have educational opportunities throughout the schools, Mexican flags, and nightlife. Anywhere you go, you are able to find a late night fiesta celebrating Cinco de Mayo. Check out how you can celebrate Cinco de Mayo this year in Lancaster:
