Tango Night 2/20/12

Monday, February 20th, 2012

YLC hosted a Tango Night today:

What a fun time!

We learned that the Tango came about due to the lack of women in Argentina! The ratio of men to women was about 10 to 1. So the men created the dance to impress the women and to get close and intimate with them. The embrace is the most important part of the dance, and there is an open embrace and a closed embrace. We learned the open embrace tonight.

There are 8 basic steps to Tango and it is a free style dance, so no two dances look alike. The man always leads and he leads with his chest. The woman can tell what the man wants to do by his chest and arms, and should be able to follow with her eyes closed. It is an intimate dance and because it is freestyle the woman needs to pay attention and feel which way the man wants her to go. The music is beautiful and the dance is very fun.

Try it out for yourself at the Argentine Tango Club on Monday nights and First Fridays!

Go to our Facebook Page to see all of our photos from tonight.

Rosetta Stone – Useful or not?

Sunday, February 12th, 2012

Many language learners have heard of Rosetta Stone, the expensive and widely-marketed language learning software. To some it can seem like an easy shortcut to hours of classroom instruction and studying. Independent learning on one’s own computer sounds appealing, but can it really replace the more classic methods?

Rosetta Stone uses what they call a “Dynamic Immersion Method” to teach languages through images, text and sound without drills or translation. This is intended to mimic the way first languages are learned. Rosetta Stone has been praised by a number of software magazines and has been used by the U.S. Government.

However, it does have some criticism. The use of matching pictures with words can be good for vocabulary, but it can be more difficult when teaching grammatical concepts. Additionally, the software leaves out an amount of cultural sensitivity to each language. The company has one set of pictures for Western languages, one for Asian, and 2 unique sets for Swahili and Latin. This leads to the problem, for example, of the word “elephant” being taught to someone learning Persian while there are very few elephants in Persia and that word is rarely used.

All in all, Rosetta Stone can be a fun and fast way for an introductory language learner to get the basics of a language. But if you are serious about the language, it is best to get some formal instruction from someone who knows it well enough to help you on your journey. Ideally you should go to the country of the language you wish to learn and get full immersion, but if you can’t, it helps to keep practicing and internalizing the material bit by bit.

For more information about Rosetta Stone and its use for learning, check out this article from “Inside Higher Ed”.

5 Foreign Words to Start Using

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

There are many words that are unique to a specific language, and they can say a lot about a country’s culture and values. Here are five interesting words that exist in other languages, but not in English:

1. Shlimazel (shli-MAH-zuhl) – Yiddish

Meaning: Someone who has nothing but bad luck.

2. Honne and Tatemae (hon-neh, tah-teh-ma-eh) – Japanese

Meaning: What you pretend to believe and what you actually believe, respectively.

3. Sgiomlaireachd (scum-leerie) – Scottish Gaelic

Meaning: When people interrupt you at mealtime.

4. Tingo (tin-go) – Pascuense (Easter Island)

Meaning: To borrow from a friend until he has nothing left.

5. Desenrascanco (the-zen-rascan-so) – Portuguese

Can you guess the meaning? Hint: Think of MacGyver.

Answer: To “pull a MacGyver”, that is, to improvise and slap together a last-minute solution to a problem, with limited resources.
