While most families in the U.S. enjoy a home-cooked Christmas dinner featuring ham, turkey, or beef, families in Japan eat Kentucky Fried Chicken. The tradition began with KFC’s hugely successful advertising campaign which promoted chicken for Christmas dinner, rather than turkey which is rare to find. Now families will reserve set meals in advance, though you still find people lined up outside for blocks around Christmas time. Outside every KFC is a life-size statue of Colonel Saunders, who resembles Santa Claus and wears a Santa suit around Christmas.

Christmas Traditions – Las Posadas
December 17th, 2011
Las Posadas is a nine-day celebration in Mexico, and other Spain-influenced countries, which runs from December 16 – 24 leading up to Christmas. Typically each family in a neighborhood will schedule a night for the Posada, or “lodging” to be held at their home. The hosts of the Posada act as innkeepers and the neighborhood children and adults act as the pilgrims, who go house to house and sing a traditional song to request lodging. They are refused lodging, in song, and are finally accepted at the designated site for the party. The group of guests will enter the home and kneel around a nativity scene to pray.
Christmas Traditions – French Yule Log Cake
December 13th, 2011
The Bûche de Noël is a traditional French cake served around Christmas time. The cake is made and garnished to look like a yule log, which was burned in ancient fire festivals of the winter solstice. As fireplaces have become more uncommon, so has the burning of a yule log, but this cake does a good job at imitating one!

Languages Mean Business!
November 9th, 2011
If you’re looking for a career boost, try learning another language!
According to a recent Forbes Insights Study, language abilities and knowledge of other cultures can help countries expand overseas and boost productivity, both globally and within the U.S. It will therefore make you more marketable in the job market if you are bilingual. (And for children, NOW is the time for them to start learning another language).
According to the study, U.S. companies will perform better if they hire individuals who have language skills and if they train their current employees in other languages. The study surveyed more than 100 executives at large U.S. businesses and had the following results:
• 65% of companies surveyed face language barriers that contribute to inefficiency, ineffective collaboration and low productivity, among other factors.
• Overseas assignments have become more common among executives. 9 out of 10 respondents agreed that international firms would not be able to compete successfully without world- class managers worldwide.
• 3 out of 4 respondents agreed that it was easier for foreign nationals to work in the U.S. than for U.S. nationals to work overseas because they are more likely to be multilingual.
• 2 out of 3 firms said that they expected U.S. executives going abroad to have basic or intermediate proficiency in the native language.
This obviously leaves the U.S. at a disadvantage compared to other countries, especially in Europe and Asia where foreign language study has long been an effective part of the curriculum. The solution? More individuals with language abilities are needed in U.S. businesses, so learning another language and about another culture will always be a good career move.
What are the top 5 most useful foreign languages for businesses, according to Bloomberg Rankings?
1. Mandarin Chinese
2. French
3. Arabic
4. Spanish
5. Russian
Other important languages include Portuguese, Japanese, German, Italian, and Korean.
