Over the past two days, the children have learned how to prepare and got the chance to taste the delicious Pizza Turnovers (Empanadillas). Here’s how to make them:

Ingredients:
- 1 can of pizza sauce
- package frozen turnover dough (discos) Yellow/white (Goya brand in the frozen food)
- 1 package of mozarella or cheddar cheese (your choice)
- oil

Take the discos out of the package. Spoon about 1 tsp. of pizza sauce on the disco. Then spread the cheese all over the disco. Fold over, moisten edges and seal with a fork. Heat in 2 1/2 incehes of oil in a deep saucepan on medium. Cook empanadillas in batches, turning to brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels.

camp 10 008

Here it is! The children, while playing hot and cold, searched around the room looking for the vocabulary card, but they couldn’t win that easy! Once they found the card, they only earned the point if they could say the word in Spanish.

camp 10 009

Have you seen their monster yet? The children worked hard on creating their very own monster. Some of them had one eye while some had six; the creativity juices were flowing! Tomorrow we will describe our monsters.

Today, the class learned about a very special frog in Puerto Rico, El Coqui. El Coqui only comes out to sing when it’s cloudy and rainy, and they are only found specifically in Puerto Rico. What do they sound like? That would be a great question for your child(ren). They can tell you!

Easter Bread Recipe

Ingredients:

4 3/4 cups all-purpose flour, divided, plus more as needed
3 tablespoons sugar, divided
2 packages rapid rise yeast
1 1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup very warm water (120 to 130 degrees F)
1/3 cup butter or margarine — softened
4 eggs, 1 divided

Directions:

In large bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups flour, 2 tablespoons sugar, undissolved yeast and salt. Add very warm water and butter; blend well. Stir in 3 eggs, 1 egg yolk (reserve egg white) and enough remaining flour to make soft dough. Knead on lightly floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 6 to 8 minutes. Cover; let rest on floured surface 10 minutes.

Divide dough into two equal pieces. Reserve one piece. Divide remaining dough into three equal pieces; roll to 12-inch ropes. Place ropes on greased baking sheet; braid. Pinch ends to seal. Repeat with remaining dough. Cover; let rise in warm, draft-free place until doubled in size, about 30 to 45 minutes.

Lightly beat reserved egg white, brush on loaves. Sprinkle with remaining 1 tablespoon sugar.

Bake at 400degrees F for 20 to 25 minutes or until done; switch positions of sheets in oven halfway through baking time. Cover with foil if needed during last 5 minutes to prevent excess browning. Remove from sheets; cool on wire racks.

Summer Spanish Camp 7/27 – 7/31

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

What do we do in Spanish camp that makes the morning go by so quickly??

We practice dialogues with partners, using the new vocabulary we have learned.

IMGP4721

We play charades and pictionary to practice the weather and clothing words.

IMGP4707

IMGP4725

IMGP4726

We get to dress up paper dolls according to the directions Señora gives us.

IMGP4714

We also dress them for the chosen weather and then tell Señora what they are wearing, in Spanish of course!

Becky has taught us a lot about Argentina this week. Becky, Kassidy and Señora acted out a legend about how the sunflower came to be. We learned a song about “la lechuza”, the owl. And our favorite activity was making the Argentinian cookies with vanilla wafers, Nestle’s lechera and melted chocolate!Deliciosa!

Summer Spanish Camp 7/27 – 7/31

Monday, July 27th, 2009

At our first day of Spanish camp we learned a lot! This week we’ll be mastering vocabulary from el tiempo (weather) and la ropa (clothing); today we only focused on weather though. After decorating our folders and greeting one another in Spanish, we reviewed our new vocabulary and played pass the card and teacher versus the class. Unfortunately we lost the 2nd game against Señora, but it was our first time; Señora doesn’t know what’s coming next time we play. Then we learned some new songs, which we caught onto quicker than Señora thought! We also played race for the card and matamosca, where we had to hit the vocabulary card with a fly swatter. This week we’re also learning about Argentina. Today, we located it on the map and colored it. Plus, we learned about the Argentinian flag and symbols. Later we did four pages of our book that I’ll be able to bring home later in the week to read to you. I can’t wait to see what fun activities are planned for tomorrow!

Summer Spanish Camp 7/20 – 7/24

Friday, July 24th, 2009

The weather finally broke for our last day of camp!

Most of today was spent tying up loose ends in preparation for the parent visit. The campers excitedly reviewed their songs and dialogues, with even the shyest members of the group coming through with their parts. We played musical chairs, went outside for extended playground time, and even spent some time painting “granja” scenes. At the end of the day, the kids joined together with the older campers and put on a fun show that exhibited the hard word they did all week. We were delighted and proud to see the kiddos do such a great job! The week was stellar, all thanks to an intelligent, curious, and fun-loving group of campers.
