Lois has over 40 years of teaching experience and has been with YLC since 2010. She is fluent in English and Spanish and acquired her second language by taking classes, traveling and living abroad.

Her favorite thing about teaching is seeing the expression on a learner’s face when he/she “cracks the code” to something. She also believes that teaching another language to native speakers of English helps break down barriers about differences and contributes to our being good citizens in a global society.

One thing she believes to be challenging about teaching is convincing a learner that he/she can acquire a language and that because someone else learns more or faster doesn’t matter. It’s the persistence factor that’s important. Her advice for learning a new language? Stick with it.

She would also like to add, “Many of my former students stay in touch with me on Facebook and I am always flattered when I get messages from them because it confirms that they respected me as a teacher and care enough to be friends as our relationship has matured”.

YO SOY LATINA! is a funny and very moving play that challenges a group of diverse Latina women to examine their identity and their connections in the contemporary American landscape. The play’s premise unites these women who come to share their individual anecdotes of living Latina in contemporary America. There’s Migdalia, a Nuyorican, who experiences prejudice from her own family because of her interracial marriage; Jennifer, a young Mexican-American college student who’s discovered her Chicana rights; Alicia, a Colombian actress who struggles with what keeps her from landing Latino roles because of the “lightness” of her skin; Maria Elena, a Panamanian, who faces inequity from other Latinos because of the darkness of her skin; Soledad, a Dominican mother who finds the courage to leave her machista husband in pursuit of her own dream; and Louisa, a Cuban-Irish who defends her right to be Latina.

Of course, we had to practice our presentation a lot, but we got to play soccer, finish our different crafts from three different cultures, and made our ‘Go Fish’ game. Overall, it was a successful day. Throughout the week, we learned so much about how to talk about our favorite past times. Now, I can tell someone what I like and don’t like, plus what I play. I can’t wait until next summer!

Plus, we broke into teams that we’ve been competing against all week. So far, the Panthers are in the lead, but it’s really really close! We also started writing our books about what we like to do in our freetime. Finally, we started writing our presentation for our parents. Unfortunately, tomorrow is our last day; but, we get to play some soccer!

Yesterday in Spanish camp, we learned so much! We visited Guatemala to make worry dolls, Spain to learn about the World Cup, and Ecuador to learn about their style of dress. We got to make our own worry dolls, jerseys, and ponchos. I really learned a lot! Besides the culture, we started to learn new vocabulary about leisure activities. Now, I can say what sports or activities that I like or don’t like to do. Today, we learned about basketball in Spain, the differences, and some basketball vocabulary. In teams, we challenged each other to basketball relay races. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
