After a fun week of traveling, we ended our journey in Brazil. Even though it’s been a long trip, we didn’t let our jet lag stop us; we were full of energy and ready to explore! We learned about the different animals in Brazil and played a balloon game that Brazilian children play when they are young. It was great to get a first-hand experience of the Brazilian culture!

Today, we took a trip to Moscow, Russia. It was a long flight, with a lot of turbulance, but we got there safe and sound. We first visited a museum where we learned about the Matryoshka dolls. Then, we got to make our very own! After we left the museum, we toured Russia. We got to talk with some Russian children, and they told us about their Christmas traditions. When decorating their Christmas tree, they decorate a star, themselves, to put at the top of the tree. Guess what? We made my very own star for our next Christmas tree. We don’t know where Miss Rebecca is taking us tomorrow; she says, “it’s a surprise”.

Today in Spanish camp we learned so many new things! First, we learned about the Spanish culture from our teacher assistant Pablo, who lives in Madrid. We also practiced our rhyme and vocabulary that we learned yesterday. We even played musical chairs! We are so good, that everyone ended up winning a prize (if the teachers didn’t call the game, it would have went on all three hours!). We learned how to ask someone where something is located, as well as tell someone where something is located.

We have spent the two days traveling around the country to Arizona, and the World to France. We got the chance to visit the Navajo Nation and learn about the Native Americans. When we went to France, we had the chance to visit the Eiffel Tower, see the Statue of Liberty and paint like Van Gogh. Come take a look at our journey so far!

Camp seems to be flying by! We have been learning vocabulary about the community, different cultural topics, and we even started reading in Spanish!

Just as promised, here are the rest of the recipes and presentations from Friday.
Rice with Beans
Ingredients:
1 lb. of raw rice 1/2 lb. bacon (optional)
1/2 cup sofrito 1 can pinto beans
1 envelope of sazon seasoning Salt to taste
water
1 can chicken or beef broth
Directions:
In a rice caldero (pot) cook the bacon until is crispy. Take out the cooked bacon and chop into small pieces. In the same bacon fat, stir the sofrito for 2 minutes. Add the cooked bacon, the tomato sauce, the pinto beans, the raw rice and the beef or chicken broth and stir well. Add enough water to cover the rice, about 1 1/2 ince above rice line. Let it boil on medium high until water evaporates. Cover your pan with aluminum foil and cook over low heat for about 35-45 minutes.
Sangria
Ingredients:
1 Bottle of Hawaiin Punch
1 Lemon cut into wedges
1 Orange cut into wedges
2 Tbsp sugar
2 Cups ginger ale
Addition ideas: sliced strawberries, peaches, handful of fresh blueberries, raspberries, kiwi, a shot or two of gin, brandy or rum, a cup of ginger ale, citrus soda pop or lime juice.
*If you’d like it as an adult beverage, just replace the Hawaiin Punch with one bottle of red wine and also add a shot of brandy.
Directions:
Pour wine in the pitcher and squeeze the juice wedges from the lemon and orange into the Hawaiin Punch. Toss in the fruit wedges (leaving out seeds if possible) and add sugar and brandy. Chill overnight. Add ginger ale or club soda just before serving.
If you’d like to serve right away, use chilled red wine and serve over lots of ice.

The children have been working really hard and using their creative juices for their presentations! Plus, they have even taken turns reading Spanish to one another.
Over the past two days, the children have learned how to prepare and got the chance to taste the delicious Pizza Turnovers (Empanadillas). Here’s how to make them:
Ingredients:
- 1 can of pizza sauce
- package frozen turnover dough (discos) Yellow/white (Goya brand in the frozen food)
- 1 package of mozarella or cheddar cheese (your choice)
- oil
Take the discos out of the package. Spoon about 1 tsp. of pizza sauce on the disco. Then spread the cheese all over the disco. Fold over, moisten edges and seal with a fork. Heat in 2 1/2 incehes of oil in a deep saucepan on medium. Cook empanadillas in batches, turning to brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels.
*Makes at least 10 empanadillas.

We got to read to one another…
and we even practiced dialogues with each other.
Better yet, we learned how to make ritz crackers and guava paste with cheese.
It was so delicious!
RITZ CRACKERS/GUAVA PASTE AND CHEESE
1 pkg. of ritz crackers
1 pkg. of velveeta cheese
1 small can of guava paste
Cut the guava paste and cheese in small pieces. Combine a piece of paste and cheese on top of each cracker. Enjoy!

Are you done yet? The children got to trace one another with chalk. Then they had to point out the different body parts. The children really loved this activity!
Which one was it again? The children got to test their memory by playing their very own homeade memory game.
What a great week we had at Spanish camp! We had a lot of fun, and learned a lot too! Spanish camp was a success!

Here it is! The children, while playing hot and cold, searched around the room looking for the vocabulary card, but they couldn’t win that easy! Once they found the card, they only earned the point if they could say the word in Spanish.
Have you seen their monster yet? The children worked hard on creating their very own monster. Some of them had one eye while some had six; the creativity juices were flowing! Tomorrow we will describe our monsters.
Today, the class learned about a very special frog in Puerto Rico, El Coqui. El Coqui only comes out to sing when it’s cloudy and rainy, and they are only found specifically in Puerto Rico. What do they sound like? That would be a great question for your child(ren). They can tell you!
